Were any relationships rewarding?

Our customers are frequently the initiators of new, creative ideas.

More than once we found ourselves in a situation when customers contacted us asking to produce a product that is not produced by anyone else in the market/nearest market. When we perceive innovativeness of such requirements, we deem those ideas the new challenge and dedicate time and investments for creation and development of new products. One of those innovative and successful products is the double-sided label put on windows. Window manufacturer of Scandinavian capital has ordered this project. The main goal of the project was to find a technological solution allowing to make adhesive labels (that serve as information memos for workers installing windows) adhering to glass very firmly (are highly adhesive) but leave no marks after detaching them (there is no need to scrape away the glue). Our successful collaboration with the company allowed us creating a new product that is currently used on Scandinavian market.

Also, we have examples of successful projects implemented in collaboration with educational institutions. One of them was the common project with Vilnius University, UAB Mercuri International, VšĮ Kitokie projektai, and Association of Lithuanian Printing Industries titled The Leades of Tomorrow 2009 (Rytojaus lyderiai 2009). Aim of the project was to contribute ti training of leaders of the country. We are positive that students working with our team gained lots of practical knowledge from employees and managers that will help them in their further career. With the help of the students, PakMarkas has conducted a market research on the perspectives of using branding labels on the Lithuanian market of soft drinks.

How does the SME think it could benefit from other sectors' input?

We see the greatest collaboration benefit when surplus value is created for both parties. In collaboration with other sectors we:

* learn to use knowledge of our field in others, non-daily situations and look at our activities creatively, as well as find possibilities/common ground allowing us to unite our activities with other activities;
* have an opportunity to better get to know the end user who is one of the main parts of our whole supply chain;
* moreover, we acquire know-low, which allows us developing new, modern ideas.

What can the SME offer other sectors?

Here we will present one benefit from business and one from the social field.

Today we have accumulated lots of experience n the field of packing and marking solutions; we have a well-developed manufacturing process and work with the largest suppliers of packing materials in the world; we have installed and always continue to look for eco-friendly technological solutions. All this allows companies that have fewer technological possibilities or do not have them at all implementing the desired project, e.g., creating a ‘smart’ label or an ‘unbreakable’ glass packaging.

We are a social responsible company collaborating with all parties interested in company operations (among them: educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, and the local community). Representatives of other sectors may find it useful implementing a new project with us or repeating the one that was already implemented in another country, exchanging good practices, and acquiring skills internationally.

To what extent would the SME be prepared to share information?

One person responsible for information sharing will be appointed. And the team of 2 or 3 people will be created for project implementation.

How would the SME describe its potential for cross innovation?

Manufacturing Potential

PakMarkas has been working with representatives of various industries in Lithuania and abroad for 20 years now. Over those years, we have developed the whole label/package manufacturing process: we consistently install the latest technologies, invest in the precision of services, eco-friendly manufacturing, and highest quality. The following systems are installed at our company:

* Quality management system ISO 9001 – since 2002;
* Environment protection management system ISO 14001 – since 2003;
* Good manufacturing practice (GMP) – since 2009;
* Efficient manufacturing based on LEAN and TOC principles – since 2010.

We have created the team of skilled professionals – some of our employees work in the field of packing solutions for almost 20 years and were the pioneers of this practice in Lithuania.

We have installed a completely new, progressive water washable photopolymer forms production technological line as for back as in 1997. In those days, forms washable with organic solutions and other polluting materials were mostly used, but PakMarkas always used environmentally-friendly raw materials.

In 2008 PakMarkas has installed the environment-friendly ten-colour flexo printing machine which was only fourth in the world. The new WetFlex Unicer paint technology distinguished by the supreme quality of reproduction was considered the core of the equipment.

Social Potential

In 2012 we have become one of the few companies in Lithuania which have installed the social accountability international management standard SA 8000. Nationally we were awarded as: Socially Responsible Company 2009 (Socially Responsible Printing House 2009), Environment Protection Company 2010 (Environmental Enterprise 2010), The Most Community Friendly Company of the Year 2011 (The Most Socially Active Company of the year 2011).

Thus, all company activities and development are based on larger or smaller innovations created by ourselves on implemented in the course of work our international partners.
